Hello everyone, Broadus and I are just returned from from our 8 day AzRa rafting trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Some rafting groups are put together by AzRa and people get to know each another over the course of the trip. We went on a trip chartered by family and friends. I would definitely recommend doing it the way we did. Deep relations can only deepen. . And I would definitely recommend the experience. It was like a slow trip through a deep footprint left on Creation. God’s footprint, if you will. Photos and more about all of that later. We are still in Flagstaff, Az., 6 hours from home. Broadus, my 8 year old son, was amazing through the whole adventure, with his cheerful attitude, his care for safety, his love of family, his wide eyes and his endless questions that left us all thinking. I want to thank all of you who wrote and called to ask about our safety after the flood last week. We were a day or two up-river and in no danger. More about that later, too. . So. Here is the day late picture prompt. This is a photo from the trip. I’ll include others to give you an idea of the grandeur we faced daily. The prompt: . … and the teasers. More later…

early image prompt

I am once again on the road. This time with my 8 year old son, Broadus. Today we drove to Flagstaff, Arizona. Tomorrow we leave on an 8 day rafting trip through the Grand Canyon, a trip that fell out of the sky, so to speak. It only cost me one of my favorite paintings, the Darfur Fridge…

Well, and some cash. I wish I could report from the river but I’ll post some pictures when we get back. Since I won’t be able to put up an image prompt on Thursday, I’ll post an one here now. I hope you find a story or two in the picture. Backstory later. Peace.

pepek the assassin

I haven’t singled out a poet’s work and talked about it specifically, but Praise, by Joyce Ellen Davis struck me powerfully and I wanted to bring it up and see what feedback came in. I love the painting but it seems so idiosyncratic it surprises me to I find that others see what I see. I usually don’t title these image prompts. I like to see what people come up with. But I felt like Joyce (a.k.a. pepek the assassin) saw into the painting and beyond and came back and reported in a way that made me marvel at her words. Here is the image and the words they prompted. Others were wonderful, too, but this one really struck me. Joyce’s blog is following the little god. Comments?

Praise

and even if you haven’t asked
the ferocity I see in your eyes is really praise

the left eye overflowing with a compassion of tears
the right eye damned where the Father stands archived and

disguised the promise is that the hand that gives
takes away nor bird nor snake nor fish can stay it

nor ringed fingers nor hard stones nor veils
nor things visible or invisible nor words

nor the blackened silences of things half-formed
nor oaths nor obligations of a thousand years

of clouded windows and passing lovers or strangers
it is there in the etcetera of praise in ruined newsprint

lifted by the wind and blown and dissolved in a sea
of rain water and even if you haven’t looked

it is there in both the promise and the praise
it is there in all of these and none of these

it is Alpha and Omega it is the Beginning and the End
forgive me forgive me forgive me forgive me oh forgive

.

.

.

the backstory on the painting, for what it’s worth…

I found this canvas in a thrift shop and recycled it. The bright colors are showing through from the original thrift shop painting. I drizzled roofing tar on the canvas and then brought out some of the images which were suggested in the texture. The next day the aluminum particles in the tar had risen to the surface and the images were obliterated. I tried to force the drying but the images kept disappearing. I finally used a barrier coat of clear shellac to seal and stabilize the tar and went in on top of that with metallic oils to bring the images out again. The image above is the final image. It now belongs to Jason Bruno, Cynthia Webster and their beautiful, gifted children (my grandchildren!), Will Scarlet and Sabine. The painting has a wonderful home.

back in new mexico…

i’m sitting here with a babe in arms. hence the lack of caps. she’s a month old and i’m pulling at her toes as she watches the screen. amazing little thing, making charming little sounds – grunts and chirps, little squeaks and whimpers. milk dribble, good smells… that baby smell some of you may know or remember. the little square head and the disappearing neck, powerful little belches. big brother runs in, shouts, grabs something and is gone. porch screen door slams. he’s raiding strawberrys from the garden. welcome to our world.

it is good to be back in the house after driving a moving van and trailer across the south. a three day drive with uncle al… moving the in-laws here to nm. a good thing, a really good thing.

lots of image prompt writing to read and post. thank you everybody for participating…

Hello from the road. Tomorrow we’ll start burning it up. Here is a prompt that reflects the chaos of the moment. Actually it was a fun collaboration with my son, Broadus, but when I look at it now it seems to fit. So here it is. There is a story in here somewhere. I hope you find it…

It’s the dog days of summer, inviting musings on loyalty, long walks and rolls in the grass, unspoken friendship and the simple satisfactions and creature comforts that make up some of the good things in life. Next week I’ll be driving a U-haul cross-country full of the belongings of my in-laws, helping them move West. Naomi will guest edit for me. See you in a while, crocodiles!

something new from the art predator, and more…

Lunch-break. The show is winding down and I’m working myself out of a job. That’s the way it works and we are usually ready to be done with the movie at this point, anyway. It never was a calling, just a way to make it easier to follow a calling. But the work is seductive for a number of reasons. The money, the esteem, the company of peers, the learning and teaching environment, the spirit, creativity and comraderie, the intensity, the built-in ending. It is the only work environment where I have ever felt I fit in. Probably the carnival or the circus would work almost as well.

I used to think I worked in a clean industry and environmentally speaking that is basically true. Now I am more aware of the fact that we bring ideas to a kind of life and we export them to the world. So no, I don’t work in a machine gun factory but I do work in a field that speaks to the lowest common denominators, promotes outrageous values, sensational ideas and leaves behind truly awful mental images. I’ve read that the second use of every new communications technology from Gutenberg forward (and maybe back) is for pornography. I think the third use is for the production of garbage for public consumption.

Is it really any harder to make a good movie than it is to make a bad one? The work of the various departments is the same. Film people tend to have a great work ethic, taking pride in their abilities and their individual and departmental production.

But the final product is generally built around a hollow core, that being the writing. The writing generally sucks, and if the writing doesn’t suck, the themes and ideas generally do. Are good scripts harder to find or to write than bad ones? There are a zillion good writers out there. Just look around here, in bloggerland.

Speaking of great writing of another sort, I am way behind on posting the image prompt responses. I’m running out of time now but I’ll make a start now and steal some time later to finish. I am also going to be spending some time on the road these next few months and it might be harder to post the prompts. I am thinking of asking some artist friends to guest produce, using their own images. It might be a nice break anyway and would open up the blog to other kinds of collaborative efforts, too. Ideas, anyone?

My, what a wordy lunch.

lunchbreak!

I miss the circulating I was doing up until the time I took this movie. Not much time for blogging now, with the arrival of little baby wonderful, and work. Spent the day aging and generally messing up a meth lab (a movie set). What do I know about meth labs? Not much, but with references and some imagination I can muck one up. Oh, the glamorous life of the movie painter. I come home spattered and speckled. The movie has been a blessing that came up out of nowhere, even if it does have me falling asleep at night in my clothes. Ada has something to do with that, too.

Ada, by the way, is wonderful. Ten days old now, stronger every day. Good strong lungs and she’s not shy about letting us know when she needs some attention. She sleeps a lot, nurses, sleeps, poops, looks over my shoulder into the world she just left, sometimes seems to nod at friends there. She’s beginning to focus with that odd, musing, gathering look that new babies have.

Here are a couple of pictures I took last night with the laptop.

So…. not much time now for anything except home life and work. I look forward to visit everybody’s blogs and reading your poetry and writing again sometime soon. In the meantime, here is a link to Cristine’s writing on ekphrasis poetry.

(It feels a little weird to be putting this personal stuff out there but… it also feels natural. Weird, huh? I guess it makes sense, with family and friends checking in here, and blogging friends, too. Thanks for all the love. Peter Tavernese, el senor openhand, I’m going to post your poem here later, too. Gotta do it.)

Now it’s back to work!

rilke – praise

O tell us poet, what you do
I praise.
But the dark, the deadly, the desperate ways —
How do you endure them, how bear them?
I praise.
But the nameless, anonymous, which no word portrays — What do you call that, poet, nevertheless?
I praise
From whence is your right, your assumed role assays
To be sincere in each mask?
I praise
And you know the stillness and the passionate blaze
As a star and a storm?
Because I praise

okay, she’s here.

and her name is Ada Corinna Swinton. At least is is now. It’s a working title. Naomi might have other ideas after a few days rest. Ada is healthy and well and is now asleep with her mother. To the many who have offered prayers and poems, warm wishes and words of support and encouragement we want to say thank you. Your presence has added another dimension to our many layered experience.

She was born at home. Ada looked to be arriving late on the evening of the 3rd of July, but not to be outdone by her brother, Broadus, who was born on Halloween, she held out for the 4th of July. Our Independence Day, for those not in the know. She was born at 12:46 a.m., weighing 8 lbs, 7 oz. She came out looking like a gnarled purple tree root from some fairytale forest, tree bark formed into a silent, eternal, impassive, awe inspiring face. She took her first breath, let out a mewling little cry and became a human being. Broadus, who had been in and out all night ran in at that moment and bonded with her instantly. She took to nursing right away. We were up at least until 3 a.m. Mother and daughter, son and father are all doing great.

I do want to put in a plug for midwives and home-births. We live near enough to a hospital if there was any dire need. But Naomi chose (it’s her body, so it’s her choice) home birth for a variety of reasons. Comfort and familiarity, surrounded by family and friends rather than well-meaning strangers. And safety. Of all the industrialized countries, the U.S. ranks third from the bottom in infant mortality. And then there is the ridiculous statistic that one third (or more) of hospital births are cesarean. A natural process is turned into a very expensive and potentially dangerous piece of major surgery, which further insures that all of the mother’s future births will also be major money makers as most hospitals and physicians will not allow normal vaginal births after cesareans. Our Northern New Mexican midwives are wonderfully gifted and experienced and able. We were assisted by Elizabeth Withnall and Connie Trujillo of the Las Vegas Midwifery Service, and NM Quickcare Women’s Health.

Okay, then, presenting…

again, thank you much.

Hello everyone. Those of you who frequent here know we have been expecting a baby to arrive any day for the last 11 or 12 days now. Maybe it will be tonight, maybe tomorrow. Who knows? In the meantime it is pretty much business as usual here in the Mobbs/Swinton household. We thank you for your kind wishes, funny notes, and your poetry.

As things could change at any moment I thought I would put a Thursday image prompt up now. Enjoy, and if you are in the U.S., have a happy 4th of July (and exercise your right to vote!).

big, big raindrops starting to fall. movie okay so far. I am getting more paint on the set walls than on myself, making an old hotel in Las Vegas NM look like one in Juarez, Mexico, with color references from Old Havana.

I am writing because I set up a new blog this morning – the storybook collaborative

I copied a number of the collaborative works to that blog so for the time being they can be found in both places. Don’t want to confuse people just want to let you know about this work in progress. Sorry about the short note, I have to get back to slog some paint. I’ll sort this new blog out and let you know what’s up with it.

3 a.m. rambles, a family portrait

fuzzy picture of the mother-to-be: presenting Naomi Swinton… The new arrival comes any day. I’m betting it is a she…and coming on the night of full moon, but it could be anytime.

followed by pictures of Broadus Mobbs, the big-brother-to-be…

Broadus during a day at the beaver dams. He’s actually pretty excited about the new baby thing.

And Mr B working on a sword in Chris Thompson’s blacksmith shop just down the road. I’ll post more of these pictures. The place is amazing. Like Chris and his work.

6/12/08 image prompt

For all the hurting people out there. The quote is from Eileen Mayhew.

Some of you work so quickly, and produce such neat things. First out of the starting blocks is paisley, with her poem, paint me a picture. Her blog (and bloglets) are to be found at whypaisley.com

Z, author of the naked truth according to z, has written Just Ride, prompted not so much by the image as by the words of Eileen Mayhew, the same powerful words that prompted me to make the painting. She asked me to say her site is NSFW, though the post is. I had to look up NSFW. The post will speak to many. The blog is for grown ups only.

yearning, is a love poem by gautami tripathy, of Deli, India. The author of several blogs, he (!!!oops!!! I stand corrected, she ) wrote in from his blog, firmly rooted

it is nice to see a love poem here… I generally associate the image with pain, and healing.

to accompany this image Cristine, author of the blog, mariacristina, brings us the island of san perso. Other writing using this image and other images may be found in the recent post, new arrivals, new arrangements.

a life winking out

Addendum, November 11, 2011.

I am tempted to take down this post. It adds nothing to the debate and drives the blog into a wall. The bottom line for me comes down to the indefensible belief that the state does not have the right to take a life. Beyond that belief are facts of race, economic inequality, DNA evidence leading to acquittals for inmates condemned to death, horror of particular methods of execution. If the someone from the family of the victim has the certainty and the guts, the fortitude to aim the gun and pull the trigger – well, that’s a different story. They would probably kill the wrong person from time to time too, though.

………………………………………………………………

What to say about a death penalty vigil, an execution watch? Should the state have the right to take a life? Karl Eugene Chamberlain was killed today in a Texas prison.

Karl grew up in the town we now call home. Naomi knows his mom, Mui’na Arthur, from activist circles. He was 37 years old. He confessed to raping and killing Felicia Prechtl, was sentenced 17 years ago and has been on Death Row since. He spent 10 years in isolation.

For the pro-death penalty point of view, and a chilling account of the crime, go here. I am sorry to say I could find very little written about the victim, Felicia Prechtl. The family’s rage and bitterness is understandable.

The problem I have with the death penalty is that it is state-sponsored, old testament style murder, a barbaric practice which serves no end except vengeance, not even deterrence. And sometimes the person who is put to death is not the person who walked into the prison. People change.

From accounts I have from people who have known him through these years this seems to have been the case with Karl.

These were some of his last words: “We are here to honor the life of Felicia Prechtl, a woman I didn’t even know, and celebrate my death. I am so terribly sorry. I wish I could die more than once.”

For Karl’s letters, bio, and his pictures and paintings visit who’s who on death row and look for Karl Chamberlain’s name on the memory pages in the left hand column.

I am tempted to take down this post. It adds nothing to the debate and drives the blog into a wall.

movie start date pushed

update…. it looks like my start date on the movie is pushed to Monday, which is fine with me. We are still doing the last minute ordering and nesting which we hope will make life in the coming weeks easier. The plan is for another homebirth. (This Naomi’s call, totally.) We have a great mid-wife, Liz Whithnall, of Las Vegas, N.M. Expect things will go smoothly but have to say the first time around was a very scary night, and not just because Broadus arrived on Halloween. Naomi and Broadus watched birthing videos tonight. He wants to be there with us.

starting a show

I start Wednesday on a movie in pre-production in Santa Fe. It will be my first show since moving to NM. I’ll be helping to make Las Vegas, New Mexico look like Jaurez, Mexico. Not too big a stretch, actually. Don’t have many other details. The reason I bring it up here is because for the short while one is on the show, a movie tends to take over one’s life. I don’t know if I’ll be able to post people’s work as often as I have been doing.

So I’m thinking to continue the Thursday prompt but to save the entries and then post them all at once, say on the following Tuesday? You can still post links in the comments. This just concerns my getting it together to offer them all in one location as I have been doing.

And then there is the little unknown one, and when she – or maybe he – will show up. We are at two weeks and counting… send up some prayers for us and we’ll do the same for you, hold the whole bunch of you in the Light. Thanks, everyone, this has been fun.

tapestry fragment, enigma…

My knowledge crumbles. The trees and the soldiers, the mountains. We go bounding over the edge of the precipice and the dolphin laughs to greet us. God veils our faces and buries our joys, our madness, our passions. We are comets wheeling out into emptiness, wishing to extinguish the shoplights and go home. I go a vast distance, collecting experience, trading stories with strangers. I shall return to this place and bring other gifts when I come.

Perhaps I was bred for war and storm, for fire and hunger, but I was also bred for other than violence. We pick through the centuries for our scattered bits and pieces, and find them remarked and remembered and tossed ashore by dolphins. We are refreshed by cool moonlight even as restlessness undoes us. We read meaning in the way the air shimmers. We are banished from love until we learn kindness, until we no longer love warfare and we no longer fear silence.

What could be more fair?

to be continued… more here.
