What a treat to have this time. I’ve been living out of a suitcase in a motel while working in Albuquerque on “The Book of Eli”. My co-workers are extraordinarily gifted and easy to be with and the sets are beautiful, sumptuous, and stark. No photos, sorry, as these are closed sets but I’m sure that when it is released the film will draw a lot of attention.
No time for my own art now. With the world falling apart it doesn’t seem smart to say no to work. We work from 6 in the morning to 6 at night, and soldier on six days a week. I’ve jumped from the art lane to the art factory. I’ll be back in the studio soon enough. Hopefully more collaborations await.
The time I have I spend with family and friends. Broadus, now 9 years old, has developed a love for model rocketry (using rockets and solid fuel engines from Estes Industries). I’m back in my childhood now, doing some things I always wanted to do. Lucky me, Broadus loves it, too.
In debriefing after our launches we have determined a few things. It is best not to launch after dark, things like that. We’ve blown up a few rockets and crashed others and we’ve frozen our butts off out on the soccer field, but we’ve had a great time.
Naomi is as usual, organizing is 12 directions. She and Ada have just returned from 4 days in NYC working with donor organizations funding some large projects in New Orleans. The Las Vegas NM Cold Weather Shelter seems to be a going concern. Folk-singer and songwriter and 7 times Grammy nominee John McCutcheon (www.folkmusic.com), will be playing benefit concerts Valentine’s Day in Santa Fe and the following evening here in Las Vegas NM, to benefit the Rio Gallinas Charter School, The Las Vegas Peace and Justice Center, and Grassroots Leadership, Inc. and their work against the private prison industry/complex and immigrant family detention centers in NM (and across the country). UWC-USA will host John’s song-writing workshop Sunday afternoon on the UWC campus (free to UWC students, $20 to others, space limited). She is also organizing the annual 2009 New Mexico Peace Works Conference – Global Youth Forum and Youth Leadership Workshops, Feb. 20 – 22, 2009, Santa Fe, NM FREE! Open to 7th – 12th Grade Youth. Terrific to have you surface, and come up for air. You certainly are bang on about the state of our economy. Wow, what a downer. Obama has inherited more on his new plate than any modern President in our lifetime. I was only a year old when FDR died. I guess this historically will be called the Great Bushcession, we’ll see.
Incredible health and vigor in the family pics. Broadus is growing like a weed, and certainly is a handsome lad. You look a bit like a young Sam Elliott in your pic. Wow, two ladies in a bathtub naked—your website is brave beyond words. Ada looks fully recovered from her respiratory problems. Maybe we should harness the energy that Naomi expends. You could light up Sante Fe for a month!
I am sure that when you check your web stats, there have been many of us checking in on you several times a week during your absence. Lovely to have you back in the fold for a time.

These are such great photos Rick! No wonder Naomi is such a n energetic doer and planner. She looks like a woman who husbands her energies well, very self-contained. Ada seems a sparkly green version of her mother. Lovely shot of the two in the bathtub!
Broadus really is photogenic – he projects a gravitas beyond the typical 9 year old. I bet the rocket launches were a great blast of fun, even in the cold. I remember well how when my Renaissance Man was 9 years old he and Rumpole had many excursions to the local soccer field to fly the little gas engined planes of which they were both so fond and excited.
And you look well and content with your lot.
I know the economy tanking has so much affected many people’s lives and doings, and am happy for you to have work relatively close to home, even tho you have to live out of a suitcase and small motel room while working enormously long hours. Your project sounds exciting, and the outcome will give you much pleasure of accomplishment. Good to have you back blogging! G
