7/24/08 image prompt

It’s the dog days of summer, inviting musings on loyalty, long walks and rolls in the grass, unspoken friendship and the simple satisfactions and creature comforts that make up some of the good things in life. Next week I’ll be driving a U-haul cross-country full of the belongings of my in-laws, helping them move West. Naomi will guest edit for me. See you in a while, crocodiles!

Here is one I wrote several years ago while living in Oregon.

Hopefully you have a mutt or two there on your rancho in New Mexico. Somehow I imagine that you live off the road in a great artsy fartsy home, like Sam Elliott and Joan Allen did in OFF THE MAP, though I doubt that approaches your reality. A mutt is important to children, and to adults. Their unselfish adoration of their masters is a thing of cosmic importance. Nice painting of the dog too. I liked it the first time you used it as well.

Definitely dog days. Getting much rain up north? We hit a big storm driving through SF yesterday on our way down from the Pecos.

Thanks Pam, I just put it up. Interesting how it fits.

marlow44, dogs do add another dimension to life. Unfortunately we don’t have one now. House isn’t so artsy yet. Working on it.

ybonsey, afternoon thunder-boomers. That SF storm blew through Las Vegas and Montezuma, too. Wild electrical activity.

I finished up on the movie today. Yeaaa! Survived another. Now to run to the bank. Happy trails, all!

This poem is called “Waiting for the sound” because I saw the dog as a retriever waiting by a pond.

  9. I thought the trees (?) on either side looked a bit like vertebral columns with ribs attached, which made me think of a Bone Tree.

Should be appropriate to New Mexico in this season.

Wasn’t sure what to make of this at first, as I’ve never owned a dog.

But in the end I found something very personal in this image: my poem is called loyalty
