okay, she’s here.

and her name is Ada Corinna Swinton. At least is is now. It’s a working title. Naomi might have other ideas after a few days rest. Ada is healthy and well and is now asleep with her mother. To the many who have offered prayers and poems, warm wishes and words of support and encouragement we want to say thank you. Your presence has added another dimension to our many layered experience.

She was born at home. Ada looked to be arriving late on the evening of the 3rd of July, but not to be outdone by her brother, Broadus, who was born on Halloween, she held out for the 4th of July. Our Independence Day, for those not in the know. She was born at 12:46 a.m., weighing 8 lbs, 7 oz. She came out looking like a gnarled purple tree root from some fairytale forest, tree bark formed into a silent, eternal, impassive, awe inspiring face. She took her first breath, let out a mewling little cry and became a human being. Broadus, who had been in and out all night ran in at that moment and bonded with her instantly. She took to nursing right away. We were up at least until 3 a.m. Mother and daughter, son and father are all doing great.

I do want to put in a plug for midwives and home-births. We live near enough to a hospital if there was any dire need. But Naomi chose (it’s her body, so it’s her choice) home birth for a variety of reasons. Comfort and familiarity, surrounded by family and friends rather than well-meaning strangers. And safety. Of all the industrialized countries, the U.S. ranks third from the bottom in infant mortality. And then there is the ridiculous statistic that one third (or more) of hospital births are cesarean. A natural process is turned into a very expensive and potentially dangerous piece of major surgery, which further insures that all of the mother’s future births will also be major money makers as most hospitals and physicians will not allow normal vaginal births after cesareans. Our Northern New Mexican midwives are wonderfully gifted and experienced and able. We were assisted by Elizabeth Withnall and Connie Trujillo of the Las Vegas Midwifery Service, and NM Quickcare Women’s Health.

Okay, then, presenting…

again, thank you much.

Wow and wonderfully done, All; you could cut the bliss and euphoria with a knife in these pics! Broadus looks like he’s known her spirit for quite a while, his hand upon her head as in a blessing, and a “what took you so long, sis?” look of love radiating from his face and impish eyes. He has lots in store for her, in the way of brotherly love and attention, I’m sure! Love and peace to you all, a job well done, good wishes to the midwives, too. Let’s insist on bliss – a la Mobbs/Swinton style! Love, Janet Leigh

She is incredible….so small, yet so full of personality. She already looks like she has opinions of her own:). I would so like to hold her, she is precious.

God bless her, and big hugs to Naomi, you and Broadus!

paisley, good question. our son seems to be fairly easy with the birthing experience. He would run back and forth between his movie and his mom to make sure he wasn’t missing anything. He came in again right as Ada was born and has been mesmerized with her since.

I add my heartfelt congratulations to the Mobbs/Swinton family! Ada Corrina you do seem to be an old soul, with so much wisdom already evident in every fiber of your adorable self. Oh yeah, Broadus is sweet now, but only time will tell hows the sibling rivalry will play out down the line–or not. He could turn out to be the Big Brother all little girls dream of. He certainly has that potential. Naomi, you remain radiant after a job well done, and how wonderful that Ada was a home birth. You folks are like an inspiration to the rest of us, all so complacent and other directed when it comes to health care.

Rick, what marksmanship, sir. A beautiful daughter, just as you began to write about over a year ago. The heavens adore you, and the Universe has selected your family unit to be a love pool. We bloggers are pleased and proud and excited and weepy and nearly cramped from smiling!

Well, how can I ever be so poetic and dramatic as your other friends? I love the Swinton/Mobbs family from the grandparents to Miss Ada and Broaddus. What joy you bring to all who know you. If I ever grow up, I want to be just like Naomi (I know, I say that all of the time but still so true.) I am so happy for you all and miss you and soon to miss more of the Swinton family. I’m feeling bereft for me and so overjoyed for you’all. Love you much.
